Thailand Wants to Give Free Facial Surgery to International Finalists

Thailand’s medical tourism is on the skids, so the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is offering the chance to win free cosmetic surgery to non-Thai females aged 25–45 (in a slight to wrinkled grandmas everywhere).

The “reality-type” beauty contest, aptly named the “Extreme Makeover” campaign, was launched at the beginning of March, and the TAT says that three finalists will receive free facial surgery and luxury accommodation. If that’s truly the case, then the devotion of such a large section of the application to women wanting breast surgery and tummy tucks is more than a bit confusing.

Specific criteria for how these finalists will be chosen isn’t clear, but don’t let that deter you from throwing your hat into the ring, ladies. If lucky, you’ll get mysteriously chosen to win a US$5,000 (161,000 baht) cash prize and a “luxury tour package.” Two runner-ups will win lesser prizes, and even those registered to vote online for the contest are eligible for “prizes.”

I can’t help but wonder what these more basic “prizes” might be… some lotion? a brown paper bag?
