The United Kingdom of China
Chinese investment into the United Kingdom has surged in recent years, as state-owned CCTV News reports that more than 500 companies now own stakes in U.K. companies, many of them holding majority shares.
Preference seems to be on the energy sector, more specifically oil & gas, with the largest portion of these holdings concentrated on North Sea oil companies.
Chinese companies currently control more than 8% of the region’s oil & gas companies. The largest of these is China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) Limited, with a 43% holding in the Buzzard oil field, the largest in the North Sea region.
This report comes on the heels of a successful Chinese Premier trip to the United Kingdom. I find equally interesting the headline that CCTV News chose to use, “How much of the U.K. does China own?”
Seems that the news agency has a decent sense of humor and might enjoy a bit of Internet trolling, just like the rest of us…
